Spend-a Day with the Music Department at Mansfield University

Who Should Participate:

Any high school junior and senior who wishes to be a music major, music minor, or just wants to continue to be involved in music during college. This is a great way to imagine your future at Mansfield University!


During the day a current Mansfield University student representative will escort you to and from all classes in Butler Music Center and also to lunch in Manser Dining Hall. If you are interested in a taking a lesson with one of our instrumental or vocal faculty, please let us know and we will schedule a lesson time for you. Students may observe classes in other areas dependent upon availability.


Most classes will take place in Butler Music Center, but you will also tour campus and enjoy lunch in Manser Dining Hall. Upon registration we will develop a personalized itinerary that reflects your interests.


Monday, November 12. Registration will be begin at 8:30 am and the day will conclude around 3:30 pm.

The Admissions Office will be providing instant decisions for prospective students who submit a completed application at this event! Students must provide a completed application, an official high school transcript and official SAT or ACT scores, along with a $25.00 application fee. Students who submit all the necessary materials will receive an admissions decision by the end of the day. Music majors then only need to complete an audition for full acceptance into Mansfield University!

9:30        Basic Music I – first semester music theory course for all music majors - Butler 202

10:30     Vocal and Instrumental Chamber Music Recital with current MU students Vocal Ensemble, Saxophone Quartet, String Quartet, Brass Quintet, Woodwind Quintet, Barbershop Quartet, Percussion Ensemble – Steadman Theater


Campus Tour for parents & students not interested in the music education major –

Meet at registration table


11:30      Concert Choir rehearsal – Steadman Theater


Admissions & Financial Aid presentations for parents – Butler 102


12:30      Lunch with MU music student representatives in Manser Dining Hall

1:30        Options to choose from:

  • Campus Tour - led by music department Mountie Ambassadorsdepart from Manser, finish at Butler
  • Concert Jazz Band17-piece jazz big-band – Steadman Theater
  • Mansfieldians -12-voice ensemble performing vocal jazz standards – Butler 102


Free time – Opportunity to visit the campus bookstore in Alumni Hall


2:30        Options to choose from:

  • Voice Class- methods course focused on vocal production and the teaching of singing – Butler 102
  • Woodwinds Class- methods course focused on teaching and playing instruments from the woodwind family – Butler 136
  • Intro to Music Technology – experience the music technology facilities, equipment, and resources – Butler 208 (Computer Lab)


3:30        Options to choose from:

  • Mountaineer Brass Band – authentic 30-piece British brass band – Steadman Theater
  • Private Lessons with music faculty (limited availability)


4:30        End of the day


6:30       TRAILBLAZER BRASS BAND – inaugural youth brass band rehearsal with members of the MU Mountaineer Brass Band.  Ends at 8:00pm. – Steadman Theater
