PIANO COMPETITION
Mansfield University will host its annual High School Piano Competition on Sunday, February 19, 2023 in person on the Mansfield University Campus. The competition welcomes students who reside and attend high schools in Pennsylvania and its neighboring states (Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, West Virginia, and Connecticut). There are two categories students can participate in: Junior Competition and Senior Scholarship Audition. The competition day will end with an optional masterclass.
JUNIOR COMPETITION (Grades 9-11)
This category is open to high school students in grades 9 through 11. Each student will perform two contrasting pieces from memory. A total of $500 in gift certificate prizes will be awarded to the best performers, thanks to the support of Robert M. Sides Music*. The former first-prize winners not allowed to compete for two years in a row.
*The prizes for the junior competition portion are provided by our generous sponsor.
SENIOR SCHOLARSHIP AUDITION (Grade 12)
This event is open exclusively for 12 graders. Each student will perform two contrasting pieces from memory, followed by a musicianship test. Mansfield University Music Department Scholarships will be offered to best qualified students. (Scholarship recipients must be academically admitted by Mansfield University, enrolling as a Piano Performance major, piano concentration in Music Education, Music Technology, or Music Business, or a BA Music Program piano track.)
REPERTOIRE REQUIREMENTS
Total performance time should be between 6 and 12 minutes and memorization is required for both pieces. Students are to perform two contrasting pieces in Classical style chosen from the following list.
- A contrapuntal work or a dance movement by J.S. Bach, or a sonata movement by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven or Schubert.
- A piece from Romantic, Impressionistic or Contemporary classical repertory.
